 Books!
« Thread Started on Mar 13, 2007, 10:33am »

Arayan entered the hall of books a little apprehensively, he was never comfortable around magic books as the large volume of words and magic tended to distort reality. He walked a little faster than normal though the maze of literature and story's until he found a quiet spot with a table where the books didn't make as much noise. This sounds a little stupid but it is true, some of the books were that magical they had to be chained to the shelf, to stop them escaping. They also talked, but with non magical ears it sounded like rustling or a breeze, nothing more.

Arayan ran his finger across a shelf, it was dusty and it left a trail. Then he found a book that looked interesting; Potion and Brews: A History, by Sir C. Flasck. He took the book from its neat little spot on the shelf and examined the front. It had cauldron and some weighing scales on a timeline. He carried the heavy book back to the small table and dusted the chair off then sat down. Then very slowly and deliberately he opened the book, as he did this it gave a satisfying creak.

As he began to read Arayan thought he heard something, he stopped in mid sentence and listened. The sound was coming to wards him, it could have been foot steps but he couldn't be sure. As the foot falls got louder, echoing off the dusty shelves he tensed reaching for his wand. He was always on edge in a magic library.

Ashen eyelashes fluttered open like the wings of a butterfly. The Demoness stood 5’8” tall, that was two inches taller than she had used to be before, but she didn’t really care; every change was a change for the better. At least at the moment when everything else was messed up, changes were for the better. She resembled her maker even more now than before, with her black hair and dark eyes and everything. It wasn’t something she had aimed for, it was just something that had occurred after her return; she had felt like changing her appearance and change it she had.

With Richard no longer interested in her tricks, she had decided to find another mortal to play with, someone to shower with gifts and promises as well as whatever his/her heart could desire, anyone except Thorne that was, because that girl was of no use when it came to company and that was sort of the main reason why she wanted a new ‘pet’. She craved another’s company, the company of someone that she could spoil and love in her own sick way. Someone that couldn’t hurt her just by a simple thought like most of her other ‘friends’ could.

The Hall of Books was always a nice place to meet people and she had known once she entered that she wasn’t alone; it was almost like the books whispered to her, telling her there was someone else there, someone belonging there, treating them nicely. In the beginning, her foot falls weren’t audible, but as she drew closer, they became louder and louder until she had reached her destination, standing in front of Arayan for a few seconds, before moving too quick for mortal eyes to follow and sat down in one of the chairs by the little table where the book was lying.

“Now, now, love. No need for a wand dear, it won’t help you much anyways.” She said with a smile and tilted her head to one side. Boy it felt weird to be back inside the castle and this time legally. To the Demoness, that was what she could benefit most from regarding Odysseus changing into the wolves; free access to the library.

“How come I haven’t seen you around before?” she asked, not really caring whether or not he knew who she was or what he thought of her childish play.

{Finally, I posted. :P}

Arayan felt the musty air move past him, he then knew the woman was not human, or not entirely human. He took in her appearance, whether it was her real one or not he did not know. He could not tell what creature or humanoid she was just from looking, he suspected some sort of shape-shifter. He also didn't know weather she meant him harm so he kept his wand at his side.

"why are you here?" said Arayan looking in her eyes for any sign of a soul. As the mystery woman was sat Arayan towered over her as he was around 6ft 7". His long brown hair was tied back with his dads bandanna, a blue one with white skulls. He did not trust this woman he knew the answer would not be entirely truthful if it was not a down right lie.

A playful smile played on her face; she could see him calculating, being just a little curious about her nature, and it was great, just the thing she wanted, someone to pay attention, to be curious. She didn't mean to harm him though, not that much anyways, maybe just a little? One tiny, tiny scratch, but nothing serious or painful. At least not unless he attacked her first. And she had a feeling he wouldn't do that unless she gave him a good reason to, and why should she do that, after all, she wasn't making enemies, she was making friends.

Why was she there? Good question. She kept his eyes while answering. "To find books, dear, or someone to play with and spoil, or maybe both," she answered sincere. That was the truth though, she wanted books and a pet, but she didn't think she could really have both at the same time. "This library is much better than the one at home, much bigger, you know? But we're nicer to our cousins when they come visit than this school has ever been. Banished from the inside we were, tried to get us out of here they did. But we're still standing," she smiled again. This was such a great day for happy thoughts.

He was so much taller than herself when she was sitting, but she couldn't care less, having learned long ago that height and size mattered little in battles between a demon and a human. "Show me some trust and I'll give you almost whatever desire your heart may have." Her heart might be black as the night, but she still liked to give people what they wanted, just to 'be nice'. Besides, she wanted to get some nice words from Anatoly for once, not just being told to grow up and stop playing the devil.

Quent now knew at least what species she was she was a demon, they liked to play games confuse us pitiful humans. "What? no offer for my soul? Theirs a surprise." He laughed as he said it, and put his wand away. "You can have books for their is nothing material you can give me that I want." This was true, Arayan didn't go in for personal possessions, unless they helped with his education, for instance half the books in the library belonged to him at one time or another.

"And as for trust, how can i trust a demon, they're as unpredictable as my mums mood swings." He had grown up believing demons were all pure evil. Then he found this library and found that some of them were not evil, just unpredictable. One day they're as heavenly as angels then the next they're a stereotypical demon, eating souls, killing innocents. Every book that he had read on demons had told him not to trust her, but his instincts told him otherwise...

She frowned at his soul joke. "I wouldn't want anything in return but some company, love. And what would I need your soul for anyways?" she smirked. "I have no need of a soul, never cared much for spirits I'm afraid." She'd had her share of spirits in the past, dealing with Unique and turning Alexian. Didn't care much for the spirits or their realm, hadn't even bothered to go there even once.

A smile rested on her face as he put the wand away, so he wasn't going to use it. Least not yet, that was good. "Anything not material you want then?" She asked with a mischievous grin; it would've been easy to give him something unique, but didn't care for that now, not unless he asked for something he wanted. But for now, she'd just pretend there was absolutely nothing she could give him and get over it.

"Unpredictable?" now she had to laugh a little. "Love, I might not be predictable, but I do care for people I take under my wing. Unless, of course, they do anything to wrong me," she sighed; this was going to be one hard nut to break. "And when it comes to keeping word, I'm good at that, if I promise you something, I can guarantee that I will do what's in my power to fulfill that promise. Like, if I promised you you can come and go as you'd like, into our home I mean, you could do that, without being hurt by the others."

"But I guess you're not interested in anything I have to offer, so I don't have to make you any promises today, we'll leave that for another time." She smiled at him. This was really not going to go all that well, as she had hoped and wanted, but she could still take the book she wanted with her out of there when he decided he didn't want to be with her anymore or if he bored her too much.

Arayan began to think on her words. "You would let me into the 'Nest' with no worry of harm?" said Arayan thinking of a chance to learn. "Would you let me study you?" He couldn't pass up the chance to study a demon first hand, it would far surpass reading about them. He could collect primary data and make his own conclusions. Just to sweeten the deal, as the demon woman seemed bent on giving him something, he said. "I suppose I could use some new stationary, I'm running low on parchment and ink."

After he said it, as he waited he wandered what it would look like, would the parchment just appear or would there be a flash or a puff of smoke? He usually didn't take anything anyone offered him, it was how him mum had raised... 'You need no one but your family and yourself' Yes thats what she used to say, but if it was for his work....

Tilting her head at his first question she smiled. "If getting into the nest unharmed is what you want, then yes." At his question about studying her, she had to let out a little laugh though; this was a first time, no one had ever wanted to study her before, so why now? But then again, why not? "Define study." She looked at him with a wholly new interest; this could be good, this could mean someone eventually would write a useful book about them and not just contradictions.

"I'll let you study me, if you'll talk to me from time to time anywhere you want." This was going to be an interesting relationship to say the least; she loved the idea of being studied, then maybe someone could tell her what kept her alive and from aging. She knew that for the vampires not to suffer they needed blood, but what did they need? She just had whatever she wanted for dinner and drink, not thinking much about what she needed to keep living.

"You get one chance to get something only for keeping someone company and you ask for parchment and ink?" She sighed. What did he expect? A show of magics? She yawned a little and did a little trick Fasiris had taught her, making a soft breeze in the library before the parchment dropped down on the table from seemingly nowhere. Then the ink, I guess. Flames licking her hand, she reached it out for Arayan to take the ink bottle.

"Go ahead, reach for it," the flames wouldn't hurt him, just there because she was really bored. "I'm Marion, by the way, Marion LeFey," she had no idea how much this kid knew about her family there, but she'd soon find out.

Arayan smiled as the answer to his question as a yes. Then when she said "define study." and he hesitated. He had just used it as round term. "Well i don't know what to do as of yet, but it will only be small test at first, like observation." Then Arayan looked quite surprised. "All you want in return is to talk any where I want? Well you can talk to me when I'm near anybody really. Its funny i thought you would have more interesting people to talk to."

He then watched intently as the parchment landed on th table and when she passed the ink over. "The flames look real, is it some kind of illusion?" Then she said her name. "You mean like Morgan LeFey?" Arayan didn't really know much about Morgan LeFey.

She smirked. He hadn't planned this yet, now had he? Hadn't thought she'd actually agree to being studied? Truth be told, she wasn't sure if anyone had ever agreed to that before, because most of the things in the books about Demons were just observations made from a rather big distance. This could end really good, or really bad, depending on the other's reactions, though she doubted they'd really dare challenge her at the moment, except for maybe Emily though. Emily was the one she'd hand her position to if she resigned as Emily actually was more powerful than her if she set her mind to it.

"More interesting people than a human in love with books? Are you kidding me?" She smiled, knowing she'd have to explain that one closer. "When you've been with the same people for a long time, they get boring, clinging to their old beliefs... Besides, I've never really liked other Demons as much when it comes to talking to them about anything other than what to do about this and that." She sighed. Solitude isn't my friend, love, it's my worst enemy." Where the heck did that come from? Whatever.

"They are very much real, they just won't burn you," she replied. A chuckle escaped her at the mention of Morgan's name. "The sorceress? Not at all, same name, different person, different origin." She tilted her head to one side and looked at Arayan. "Care to tell me your name, love? Or do you want a pet name? No one's ever studied a queen before," she grinned.

Arayan stared, not only was he talking to a demon, She was the Queen. "Oh dear.... Your the Queen of demons?" Arayan had suddenly gone pale, She would be a lot more powerful than he had first thought. She could literately destroy him. "My name is Arayan Quent. Err." he remembered a book he read once, It was called 'Demon Manners' "My Liege?"

At his surprise at what she'd just said about being Queen, she chuckled. "The one and only around here," she replied the question with a smile. She stood up and placed a hand on his cheek, turning his head slightly as if studying him. "There's no need to worry, love, there's something about you that's quite interesting, don't be afraid," she let go of him and looked around the room.

Taking a few steps behind Arayan, she eyed him and smirked. Quite an interesting specimen, if she had to say so herself. His brown hair was so different from her last obsession, so much fuller and best thing was, this one liked to read whereas she doubted Raven had even opened a book in his life unless it was in class. No, this Arayan had even looked up Demon manners, so it would be quite interesting to let him study her.

Sitting back down, she smiled innocently. "Someone's done their homework," she winked at him. "But you needn't worry about good manners in the Lair, because most won't look twice in your direction, unless you draw too much attention to yourself, once you've made it inside the entrance." And he would make it past the entrance quite easily, right away actually, just had to drop his name.

{No biggie}
